Taylor, Williamson lead Kiwis fightback

NEW DELHI: New Zealand's Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson put India on backfoot with their unbeaten third wicket century stand in the first ODI against India at McLean Park in Napier.

Scorecard

Williamson played towards long on to bring up his seventh ODI fifty that saw five boundaries.

The duo batted sensibly and took their team's total to100-run mark in the 23rd over to turn the momentum in Kiwis way.

Taylor and Williamson completed fifty-run stand in 67 balls to lead New Zealand's recovery after losing openers cheaply.

Mohammed Shami gave India a terrific start by dismissing both New Zealand openers Jesse Ryder and Martin Guptill early after hosts were invited to bat.

Shami first bowled out Jesse Ryder (18) in the fourth over and then got Guptill (8) caught by R Ashwin in the eighth over to reduce hosts to 32/2.

Ryder hit 3 fours and a six in his 16-ball 18 before being bowled by Shami.

Earlier, Indian skipper MS Dhoni won the toss and elected to bowl.

The reigning World Champions will be looking to defend their number one ranking, in this format of the game, against the eighth-ranked hosts.

Unlike their previous tour in December, this trip imparts greater significance to India. Against South Africa, the Indian team management decided to use the three-match series as a learning exercise for the ensuing Test series.

Teams:

New Zealand: Martin Guptill, Jesse Ryder, Kane Williamson, Ross Taylor, Brendon McCullum(c), CJ Anderson, L Ronchi, Nathan McCullum, Tim Southee, AF Milne, MJ McClenaghan

India: Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Ajinkya Rahane, MS Dhoni(c), Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Bhuveshwar Kumar, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami
