The Indian team selection for the Champions Trophy squad is in a couple of days and one of the areas of concern can be the opener's slot. Virender Sehwag was left out of the probables list while Gautam Gambhir has been in poor form in the T20 extravaganza.
Murali Vijay, too, hasn't been in good nick playing for CSK while Shikhar Dhawan is the only player who has batted with some sort of assurance since his return from a hand injury.
As of now, it's likely that Dhawan, who made a great Test debut for India, will be there in the list of 15. Ajinkya Rahane's name, too, could come up for discussion, but it's a matter of conjecture whether MS Dhoni would prefer the Rajasthan Royals player in the ODI side.
The only point going in favour of him is the English conditions, where the ball moves around and the Indian team will need a solid opener.
Despite his patchy show in the T20 tournament, Vijay was a pillar of strength for India in the last Test series against Australia. Dhoni has some faith in the TN opener and he might just make the squad finally.
In that case, for the third opener's slot, could be a toss up between Rahane and Gambhir, even though Dhoni has played Rohit Sharma in the top slot as well.
All these issues will be taken into consideration as the five-man selection committee, led by Sandeep Patil, meets in Mumbai on Saturday.
